Shhhh it's baby season...

mommaturtle Mar 08, 2004 11:16 AM

I got the call last night.... Time for the squirrel rehabbers to meet up at the local zoo and discuss body weights and proper feeding methods etc. My mentor had four neonate squirrels come in last night Although I am kind of concerned about West Nile Virus hitting us this year. I have a two year old daughter and might be holding off on rehabbing this season until I learn more. It is transmitted by blood and mucous membranes as far as I know... All that takes is cleaning squirrel dishes in my kitchen near our food and such.

Joker, have you had much experience with West Nile? I hear it can be gnarly for the elderly and young children. As much as I want to rehab I want even more for my daughter to remain healthy

I am rather excited about this season because a lot of our rehabbers have been studying Homeopathy which has been proven to reduce rehab time and quicken release. We all know how nice that is. Talk to you crazies soon. Enjoy the babies!!!!

I found a 54 gram baby on the roof of another kid's car last week. Eyes weren't open yet, and the poor girl was covered in mites. She is stable now though and is with a good rehabilitator. With all this warm weather, baby season should really be on a roll soon.

Here, our west nile virus candidates are birds....I have not heard of it occurring in squirrels? Any additional info you have would be great!

Terri (shhh, it is NOT baby season! LOL)
