Attention Bat Keepers!

ccgerbilclan Sep 15, 2004 01:01 AM

Hello,

About a month ago, I was given a Little Brown Bat. This bat was found being attacked by crows and was rehabilitated and then given to us for further rehab. We are keeping the bat as his right leg is useless, causing him to fall when hanging, and he cannot stay in the air for prolonged periods of time. He has become quite tame, and he seems to have adjusted to captivity well.

We are keeping him in a wood/mesh cage that is about four feet long by two feed wide by three feet high. He is brought out of the cage at night time to fly around the basement, although his cage is large enough to allow sufficient exercise.

He has learned how to drink from a rodent water bottle and he eats mealworms and the occasional cricket.

Although I know I am capable of keeping this bat alive, happy and healthy, I have a couple of questions:

1) I am wondering if captive Little Brown Bats absolutely NEED to hibernate...?

2) How many regular sized mealworms should the bat eat every night?

3)How would I go about getting the rabies vaccine for myself and my family?

4) How does one go about getting a lisence (exotic pet lisence or wildlife rehaber lisence) in the Province of alberta?

Thank you for your help,
Devon

Unfortunately, I am able to offer zero assistance, if not less....I live in the US, not Canada, but if you contact some sort of park service or rehab facility, they may be able to assist you with licensing info. As for the rabies vaccine, I am not honestly sure if you would need the pre or post-exposure vaccine, but that is something to discuss with your general physician.....just keep in mind that they may ask why you want it, so watch how you say things. Good luck, hopefully someone will be able to help you!
