I've rehabilited several grey squirrels over a period of years and now, after Hurricane Charley, I am in possession of yet another orphan squirrel. My brother found her in an oak tree that didn't make it thru the storm...she was squealing her little blind head off! Anyway, he gave her to me and, aside from some minor bruises she received in the fall, was in good health. Her eyes were still closed but opened a week later so I figure right now, she's about nine weeks old.
My problem is, I'm trying to wean her away from formula and despite supplying her with all kinds of goodies (strawberries, grapes, sweet potato, broccoli, carrots, sunflower seeds, pecans, monkey chow, etc), she still would rather have the formula than anything else. She has also refused to drink the formula out of anything but an eyedropper (she sucks it out of the tip). She DOES eat solid food but mostly only wants strawberries and pecans....seems no matter how hungry she is, she lets the rest of the food lay. I can't recall ever having this happen before with the other squirrels I rehabilitated...they all took to eating solid food (and refused the formula) within a day or two.
I realize that every squirrel is different but is there anything anyone can recommend that I do to help wean her?
