how do you feed a baby mouse?

pinkinthemiddle Oct 13, 2004 08:09 AM

My husband went for a bike ride and found a baby mouse/rat *can't tell the diffrence. He's still very young because his eyes are still sealed shut and he's about an ince long. We've been giving him baby formula watered down a bit and he seems to be taking it. Now my problem is my husband does the night time shifts *every two hours* and I do the day and mornings. I watched my husband feeding him and he looks so confident and then I go to do it and can't. We're feeding him with a medicine dropper and he takes it for my husband but I'm a little too insecure with such a small animal in my hands.
I have tried letting the food drip in the cracks of my hands and letting him lick it out of the cracks and it worked for a few licks but then he stopped. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get him to eat from me?

Thanks
Steph

Small syringe without the needle. Pet shops might have them I would use a 1cc if you can find it. As I'm sure you have found a medicine dropper is difficult to control and you are more than likely going to end up aspirating it and causing pnuemonia. As soon as you see the little guy cruising around and has some fuzz you can put the puppy formula on bread and it will eat that till release. I rehabilitate squirrels and end up with nests of mice and rats. This has been VERY successful. I use Esbilac formula though not human infant formula. Good luck you guys It is awfully sweet of you to help.
