How do I become a Wildlife Rehabilitator?

AlliMarie Apr 18, 2005 12:08 PM

I've been doing small rescue work with reptiles for several years now, and have done some assistance with wildlife rescue in the past. It fascinates me to no end. I actually prefer the company of animals to humans, and nothing makes me happier than helping a less fortunate critter find his way again. In high school, the local community college offered a shared course, through which I achieved an AAS degree in Veterinary Technology, but due to a lack of communication, wasn't notified until 3 years after the fact, so I am not licensed. I do still work with my veterinarian, on anything to do with my animals, and any interesting cases he may have, just to keep me in the loop. But I really want to do rehab work, and have no clue where to begin. What do I have to do to become licensed? I'm 22 and live in central Iowa. To my knowledge, we do not have a state rehab facility, but operate solely on individual rehabbers. I want to eventually work in a state facility - what is the closest one to me? I assume that all of you have taken this path, so any guidance you could give me I'm sure will be valuable.
Thanks in advance for all your replies!

Sounds like you are on the right track! Find other rehabbers, and look to them to be mentors. I am not familiar with any facilities in Iowa, but if you contact your DNR they may have info, and this link has the names of a few individuals in your state www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contactA.htm. You can also contact Humane Society's, many of them have contacts for any orphaned or injured wildlife coming in and may be able to point you in a direction.

Make sure also to check your local laws, as I am not certain which states require permits and for which species they would be required. The other rehabbers in your area should be able to help you with that. The DNR should also have information about State Facilities, I am in Wisconsin, and I do not believe we have one, but several individuals are licensed rehabbers, and others work under the umbrella of rescue/rehab groups or shelters. Good luck, hopefully some of the others will jump in with more suggestions!

Also, great time of year to inquire! Baby season is upon us, and all of the critters are becoming active now that spring has FINALLY arrived.
