A cat brought a garter snake to my door today. It has multiple puncture wounds and lost some blood, but when I brought it inside to warm up, it started moving around and became quite active. I want to release it, but the temperatures here are supposed to be below freezing at night and pretty cold during the day for the next few days, so I'm wondering if I should keep it until it gets a little warmer or until it has a chance to heal. What should I do with its wounds? The bleeding has stopped - should I put anything on them? Right now, it is inside in a clean 5 gallon bucket with some grass and a plastic dish to hide under. I plan to put in a shallow dish of water too. Any other suggestions? I don't mind going out to get a few supplies for it if necessary, but I'm not sure what I should get for what may hopefully be just a few days. My house is pretty warm - do I need a heat pad for it? I live in the country, so there are plenty of good places for it to go if it heals enough for a release.
