Help, Run over garter snake

fuzzypeg Aug 29, 2007 11:58 AM

Hello everyone. I am new to both rehabbing and to this forum. Today I have found a what looks like a relatively young garter snake on the road. It is still alive but not doing well. It has been run over by a car. Some of the innards are outside and there are two large gashes on it's side. I have put nothing on any wounds yet (as there are internal organs involved) but have some disinfectent gel, sterile water, and bandages etc. The snake is set up on paper towels with water, shrimp (until I get something else from the store) and protection from the world. Right now the cage is on top of the fridge to keep it warm and quiet.

I don't know if this poor little guy can be saved. I know very little about snakes.Any help would be apprecieated.

Thank you!

Well, about an hour after writing this (and after I had got some food for him) I rinsed the wounds with sterile water and put some antiseptic gel on them. Gave a little water and provided food and water for the night. I put a heating pad on low under him for the night.

Unfortunately, but not unexpectedly, died during the night.
