If you are referring to a Brazilian Rainbow Boa, (BRB), then I'd definitely choose the blood. Then again, you are at the blood forum so anyone here will tell you a blood! If you go to the boa forum then they will tell you the boa.
I have had several different types of boas, and though I do enjoy them very much and still keep a Dumeril's and a Colombian, there is NOTHING on this Earth that could keep me away from the bloods.
Why? you ask... well in short... they are fat, lazy, beautiful, sweet and you can do anything with them. Boas are always so hyper and want to move around all the time. A blood you can sit on the couch with for hours and chill and the thing will never even move.
And a nice, fat healthy grown blood is for more pleasing to the eye than a BRB. Then again, I have never really liked the rainbows....
Though their keeping will be similar, a blood will get considerably larger than a BRB. Remember that. Also, there are smaller bloods you can get like the Borneo (p. breitensteini) that stay around the 5-6 feet range... and the Sumatran's that are slightly smaller then that.

Hey,
I would pick the blood they are wayyy more personable the rainbows and easier to care for.

good luck

In fact, I did! They're both very high humidity snakes, so either way you're going to have to be careful with that. My BRB is acutally more easy going but I really love my blood too.

Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

I agree with that because I did the same thing! Was having trouble deciding, so I got both. Its a nice mix to have they both get about the same length but ones a more hyper skinny snake that like to move around, and the others a big fat lazy snake that likes to sit there. If im handling my rainbow I have to watch her or else she'll dissapear quickly(which has happened a few times...she was actually hiding in my car for 6 days one time!) on the other hand my blood will just sit there, he was on my bed just looking around for about 5 hours yesterday I can leave the room and come back and hes still sittin there...not like he could hide anywhere anyways! Unfortunately I think I will be selling my brb soon to get a girlfriend for my blood, so obviously now I would say get a blood! But there both really great snakes.

i agree also i had both but my brb got out and never came back i will get another soon but i do have 2 bloods and they are great.

Hey,
Judging from the phenotype of the animal and from a photo I'd say that no, it is not a Borneo red blood, hence your description of BRB. There are no known Borneo red bloods, to exist to date. Although, there are light animals with lots of yellow in them, but not the typical red color more commonly associated with the Malaysian reds or North Sumatran reds.

You might want to look at the scalation just under the eyes. If there are several granular scales just under the eyes and making contact with the supra labials - then you have your self what is refered to as a short-tail, perhaps Borneo short-tail(but I sincerely doubt it). If there are no small granular scales making contact with the junction of the eye, but instead find that the junction of the eye is instead making contact with the supra-labial scale, then you have your self a sumatran red more than likely.

Neither are what I'd call beginner species by any means, so it comes down to how familiar you are with reading snake behavior. Are you confident that you can provide either species with the care and husbandry requirements of each? Have you done EXTENSIVE homework on both Brazilian rainbows & blood pythons prior to keeping one of these animals?

For the intermediate keeper seeking a challenging yet extremely rewarding species with which to work, I'd recommend, blood and short-tailed pythons any day.

bloodpythons Oct 14, 2003 10:55 AM

"Stunna" is now Kev's favorite adjective!!! I think I'm going to be hearing it for the next eleventy million years. It was good to see you at the show - glad to hear you've done your research prior to diving into bloods. I think you'll really enjoy keeping them!

Good luck!
