Ever DIY a UGF Plate?

AF Jan 23, 2004 02:56 AM

The ones I have are a bit of an off size, and I've been thinking about putting some equippment under them...

I'd want to use a special material for the plate itself, so I'd have to start from scratch, and I'd probably need a couple of inches clearance from the tank bottom.

We built our own plate but in our case is was for a plenum in our 210g saltwater reef. We made it from plexiglass sheets that we cut many small slits with a power tool. It was pretty time consuming and had trouble with the saw getting hot and melting the plexiglass as we tried to cut it but it went better taking our time with it. Another thing that most people do to make plenums is to use pieces of pvc pipe to raise a piece of light diffuser grid cut to size. You can get it at most hardware stores like home depot etc. Put some nylon window screen over the grid to keep gravel/sand from falling through. I'm sure it would work great for UGF as well. Very easy to do.

Hmm, Why not just cut the plexiglass into slats, and then reattach them close together with support pieces? Seems that might be a lot faster, so long as you can hold them in place when you melt them.

Hmm, maybe I could use slate, and silicone. That'd take a hell of a saw though. It'd weigh a ton too, but then I could glue whatever decorations I wanted on it!

Under gravel filters are a waste of time. For the kinda headache it would cause, just go buy a good filter.
