DIY tank stand?!?!?! HELP please!!!!!

fire_eel Feb 25, 2004 09:23 PM

I have a tank the measures 150cmx50cmx50cm and holds 375l of water. the approx weight of the tank (with water and stones) is at least 400kg, if not more. i want to make a stand for it, is there any suggestions on what type of wood i should use etc, to make it able to hold that sort of weight.

Geeze, I'm stuck using that evil Englis system of measurements. Sounds like your tank's about 58x19x19 inches, probably one of those 70 gallon tanks.

I'd make a guess that 2x4 legs would support it, but to be safe, I'd use about six, maybe eight 2x4 legs... Oh, that evil english... Those are approximately inch measurements for the legs... shall we say 5X10 centimeter legs...

I don't DIY stands too often, so you may wish for a second opinion, but I think they'd hold.

it is 99 gallons, 40x20x20 inches and will wiegh round 1000 pounds. i hope that helps with the conversion. its kinda big, but itll be good once i get the stand made. do your suggestions still work for this now you know the conversions? thanks for the help! :D

Well, the conversions were reasonably close to my own guesswork.

As I said, my suggestion of wood was only a guess. I am neither an architect, carpenter, or structural analysist.

What you might do, is take a peek at what sort of wood the professional aquarium stands are using.

2x4s are reasonably sturdy, but 4x4s might be better.

I used 2x4s in the construction of the stand for my 120 gal. They work fine, in fact I believe I may have overbuilt it. Pro stands ive seen are flimsy compared to mine.
