How to clean the Python?

inkmama Aug 08, 2004 12:50 PM

A silly question, perhaps (I'm new here...) but...I've had my Python for some time and it's developed black mold inside the hose. How do you clean the hose? Or do I just need to buy a new hose? The green fittings are fine.
Thanks in advance!

I have the same problem with mine, not sure how to fix it other than completely drying out the hose after use. The mold shows up from moisture that stays inside the hose. I suppose you could run a bleach solution thru the hose, but I wouldnt know how much to use. just be sure to run some water thru the hose before the next use.

Well, when you clean plants to get rid of algae, you can use a 1:20 soultion of bleach, and then dip them in water with aout twice the reccomended dosage of chlorine remover before putting them in the tank.

That would probably kill the mold, but getting it out of the hose is a different story.

Some stores sell these funky things that look like little bottle brushes stuck to thick fishing line, for cleaning hoses. That would probably work, unless the hose is corrugated.

PS: I've noticed that while rubber often develops mold pretty fast, plastic doesn't seem to do this as quickly. If cleaning become too much of a chore, you might look into a substitute tube.
