moving w/fish?

mp1 May 23, 2005 09:24 AM

I'm hoping to draw on the collective experience of the good folks here. I have a ten gallon aquarium with two tetras, one zebra danio, two long tailed danios and a pleco. I know that moving is somewhat stressful for fish but I'm wondering if I'd be able to take these guys with me or if I'd/they'd be better off giving them away.
My move is going to be about a 3 hour drive and it'd probably be about another 1 1/2 to 2 hours before the fish reached their final destination and things were 'back to normal'. I do have the ability to run the filtration/airation stuff in the car during the trip. I've had them for over two years and would hate to let go of them but, if that's what's best for them, that's what I'll have to do.
Any/all input is appreciated.

Thanks
Matt

You should be OK moving the fish as long as you plan it well. Put the fish with water from the tank in something secure that won't spill and is opaque. Move as much of the tank water as possible. Am I correct in assuming that you have at least one battery operated air pump? Be sure to keep the gravel, plants and filter wet to preserve the bacteria. When you get to your destination get the tank set up as soon as possible - it should be one of your first priorities. Keep the lights out for the day so that the fish will destress.
