Please HELP! New & Confused!

sadnewt Sep 22, 2005 12:49 PM

Hi there,

I'm completely new to these forums, and can't figure out where/how to post. I'm having a MASSIVE problem!
I have a 6.6 G fish tank w/2 angels, 1 clown loach, 1 catfish looking fish (bottom feeder), another bottom feeder and a silver fish. We decided to get a Newt, we named him Chicken Belly.
We were BEYOND excited over said newt, but admitedly, new NOTHING about newts. The fish place told us to simply "put him the tank with the others", and that he may from time to time, shed.
Anyway, he's been in there since Saturday, and things are horrible. His toes have slowly been disappearing, as has the back of his tail. I know you may think we are stupid, and we're not, we just honestly thought that he might be shedding his limbs. I called a friend and asked, and he told me that clearly, the fish are eating him. All his toes/feet/fingers/hands are all gone - he's completely stumped. I don't know what to do! He's totally still alive too. We can move him to another tank, but my question is - how traumatized is he? Will he survive? Will his limbs grow back?

Thanks,
SadNewt

Oh my! I don't know too much about newts either but I do know that they need access to land. The best place to post your question would be in the Reptile & Amphibian forum at forums.kingsnake.com/forum.php?catid=26.

Do get him out of that tank. Call around and see if there any vets in your area that will treat him. I would start with any who treat reptiles or exotics.

Also, I must let you know that a 6.6g tank is WAY to small for the fish that are in it. It would be much more suited to a betta or a few small tetras.
