DIY Budget Power Compact Lighting

Voodoo_Charlie Jun 06, 2006 12:21 AM

Home Depot sells compact fluorescent 5500K daylight bulbs. I just made a pair of hoods for my 55 planted tank using four of them, producing 101W of fluorescent light (I neglected to note the lumen rating). Over the course of about four hours I have noted about 1/4" growth on my anacharis since I put the new lighting on. All said and done it cost $80 to assemble. I used 4 bulbs, could have easily fit one more in each 22" hood. Just a thought for all you guys out there who want the big lights and don't feel like mortgaging your house to pay for it.

Sounds like a winner to me. For quite some time the only light I used for one of my 10g tanks was a compact flourescent from a floor lamp next to the tank. I finally "upgraded" to an actual hood. I've always had plants in this tank but also had a lot of algea on the side next to the lamp
