THINKING OF BREEDING

sallie_keeper Oct 12, 2003 03:16 AM

Hello, NEED advice, I am thinking of breeding my 3 year old Amel female next spring to my 1 year old Sunglow male.... What do I need to do to prepare for it...NOW??? DO I need a cool down of BOTH snakes?? Is the male too young to breed?? He is good size, and should be twice his current size by breeding time.. Will this be a bad mix of colors?? Female is VERY NICE Amel, Male is growing into Sunglow..

ALSO, the yearling male is currently in with a yearling female.. Has been since hatchling. At what point to I need to remove the female from male?? I DO NOT WANT To breed second female too soon..

Any advice you are willing to share, is greatly appreciated..

Thanks.

Sounds like an OK pair to me. When you say a nice amel do you mean very little or a lot of white? To me a nice amel has very little white. If you mean the opposite, then breeding to a sunglow is kind of counterproductive.

The male doesn't really need to be very big (or so I'm told; I haven't bred anything yet either).

If I were you, I'd separate the yearling snakes now. If you don't do so now, do it at least before next spring. The male will most likely breed with the female if he is with her when breeding season commences.

I've heard that you can breed cornsnakes without any cooling, but that you sometimes get better fertility if you cool them even if you just cool the male only.

I guess that she has very bright colors. I guess lots of white, but not like a candy cane. The male was bought as an amel...possibly candycane, but has since lost all white on body.. He is still very nice, but he was bought for the idea of breeding my big girl. As long as everything is healthy, I've never seen an UGLY corn.

Here is my Amel, Gaia..

Hope you like..
