what are the 3 smallest croc's in the pet trade?

arboreals Oct 12, 2003 03:31 AM

I'm looking to get into crocs soon. Going to build a nice big pool for them. I'd really like to stay with the smaller ones. Any of them calm at all? I don't mind a psycho dwarf caimen but just looking at what else is there. Also what's the price range? Looking at all my options. Thanks in advance,
John

i'm not 100% sure on this put...
Hatchling prices:
dwarf caiman (palp)-$250
smooth front caiman (trig)-$250
spectacled caiman not sure on price

anyway these prices are from what i've seen. Also.... smoothfront i've heard are the more aggressive and dwarfs can also be a handful. And these two types also like faster moving water hence the 'armored' apierence.

hope this helps

if anyone else has something to add or change please do

Cuviers dwarf(Paleosuchus palpebrosus) about 4.5ft
Smooth fronted(Paleosuchus trigonatus) about 5ft
Spectacled(Caiman crocodilus) can get around 6ft

these lenghs afe for males, females tend to be smaller.
this infomation and a lot of other very good information can be found at crocodilian.com

good luck

The three smallest would be Paleosuchus palpebrosus, P. trigonatus, and Osteolaemus tetraspis. Either of the Paleosuchus genus are relatively commonly available at about 170-250 for a hatchling, while Osteolaemus tetraspis is somewhat harder to find, and runs 600 . All three species are under 2 metres on average, but all three also tend to be a bit spastic, and don't forget, THEY ARE QUICK!
