Female Guppy with protrusion from vent

judyfurlow Aug 18, 2007 02:20 AM

Hello,

My female guppy gave birth to six fry (first time since I bought her) and now has a strange, pink mass (bubble) protruding from her vent. It changes in size, small to large, daily. Please see image.

She continued to have more fry, however the mass is still there. She eats well but is obviously uncomfortable. Is this possibly aborted eggs and undeveloped fry? Should I try to remove the mass? I have placed her in a hospital tank with some aquarium salt to help her.

Any advice?

Hello! I came across your post while searching online - we also have a female guppy with the exact same problem. As we have many females in our tank, we do not know if she has given birth or not. This red "bulge" just appeared this evening. She is eating and appears to be acting normally. She does not appear to be in distress, though it sure looks uncomfortable.

If you come up with any information, we would sure appreciate if you could pass it long.

Thank you, and good luck!

Hey folks. I'm sorry to hear about your guppies. I used to breed guppies, but I had to give them away when I moved. I only had 4 or 5 clutches, and haven't come across this yet. I really wish I could help, so I hope someone that has experienced this and can help you out.

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately my guppy died and I never did find out what was wrong with her. Another website indicated that it may have been her egg sac containing her next "drop" of guppies. No one had a definite answer for me. The guppy did have 12 fry before she died.

Hope someone can give us an answer.
