One of my male guppies has a red streak on both sides of his upper back (if guppies have backs)They start behind his eyes and go straight back towards tail, in a very straight line, almost appears to be a scratch. He has been pestering one of the females relentlesly. Could she have inflicted an injury to him? (not that I would blame her..lol he just won't leave her alone for a second..)
Any ideas?? Should I do anything???

The good news is, I've not heard of it for a disease or illness ... and I am pretty well read on them. If you think it is a scratch, you could add some melafix (which shouldn't hurt your fish if they are not injured) or just some stress coat/zyme. The female couldn't have hurt your male, although I wouldn't put it past her to try... she'd only be able to nip his fins though.

Your female is probably pregnant because that is when males bother them the most, or she's just had her babies in which case he's trying to impregnate her.

Just keep an eye on the red mark, and keep us posted. If you feel there is not an answer fast enough (please excuse me because I've got 15 credits with 2 difficult classes and a independent study - I'm nearing the end), please feel free to email me at phishie@pethobbyist.com and I will do my best to help you figure it out, but like I said, I don't think it's anything to worry about.

phishie,
Thanks for the response. The lines seem to have become less red but still noticeable. I added melafix last evening to be on safe side. I'll keep an eye out for fry. (Geez, can't leave them alone for a minute and they make you grandparents) This is my 1st aquarium, I've done quite a bit of "research" on the www. I guess i need to get a fry net to protect the little fellas.
Good luck with your classes. If I may ask, what is your major? If I do need a speedier response I will e-mail you.
Thanks again,

Well it's good they are getting better. I'm not sure what it could be. Guppies are called the million fish because they keep on reproducing and reproducing. Some advice for your first aquarium: just keep up with the maintenance and you shouldn't have any problems. Yes, you will need a breeding net/box and a separate tank to raise them.
Thanks, I need all the luck I can get. Need to do really well (A's and B's). I am majoring in marine bio, and have wanted to be one since I was 9.
