filter too strong! deflectors?

theSward Sep 12, 2007 03:34 AM

I just bought a 16-gal bowfront tank. I have a Penguin 150 filter with a biowheel, and it really puts out a strong stream of water, which goes from the back left of my aquarium, towards the front (the bowed part), causing a good current to circulate across my tank. I just bought 3 albino corydoras to cycle the tank, and I notice as they swim all over the place, when they try to get bubbles from the surface they seem to have to really swim with all their might to get near the surface, but give up and swim/float back down with the current extremely fast. I'm thinking the current is way too strong. I've stuffed a few aquarium plants under the hood, stuck in the awy of the filter current, and this helps, but I want a more stable deflector! Does anyone know of an idea for a good homemade deflector I could use that would really minimize such a strong current in the tank? Thanks in advance!

Have you looked for an adjuster on the filter somewhere?

I can't think of any deflectors that would work better than plants. We'll see if anyone else can help you.

I have taken a short piece of tubing of a smaller diameter and stuck it inside of the intake tube. This diminishes the amount of water flowing into and through the filter.

Be sure to have a fish guard around that inflow tube.
