What type of sand for substrate?

judyfurlow Sep 26, 2007 04:11 PM

Hello,

I have three panda corys and want to change the gravel substrate to sand. I have done A LOT of research and am still confused!!!

Silica sand is suggested but is also criticized by many people for being too sharp, as with Pool filter sand, and any sand blasting sand.

This is a Freshwater tank and I want to use the correct type of sand that won't hurt my corys.

Thanks,

Judy

Why do you want to change the substrate to sand? What are you trying to achieve?

If you want to create a cory-friendly substrate, consider the smallest grade of gravel. The stones are 1-2 mm, which is less than 1/10th of an inch. The stones are not sharp, which is the biggest problem with many grades of sand, because it harms the cory's barbels.

You may have to hunt a bit, but ask your local aquarium store what kinds of gravel they can get. Buy it from the one who wants to help you. This will benefit you both.

Good luck!

Hi davemill,

I have read several opinions that recommend sand for substrate for corys and loaches alike. I have a large gravel mix in the tank now and am going to switch to sand and possibly small, smooth river rocks. Different opinions on what type of sand to use so I was looking here to find a better suggestion.
