iridescent shark

macdonald Nov 28, 2007 06:34 PM

our iridescent shark has a white film over his eyes and fins and tail. the fish have had ick, so we have been giving them ick-x. he is the only fish that has this film, though. could the ick-x have something to do with it? or is something else wrong with him? what could we do to help him? any help would be appreciated. thanx

A white film would not be ick. What spots all over the body are ick (FYI). Sounds like there may be a bacterial infection going on in your tank. Melafix should do the trick. However, you will need to do a water change if you have not already because they are necessary after treating the tank for ick.

Please let us know how things work out or if you have any other questions.

Keep us posted on the progress, so if it's not one we can work on another diagnosis.

the iridescent is now fine, but now our bala shark has it. but now my main concern is that the bala seems to be even worse off. he has red going all through his fins, tail, and around the gills as well. his tail and one fin are ripped slightly. could he have hurt himself? or is he sick? what can we do to help him? thanx

Oh my! It may be red pest; I was trying to find a picture for you, but no luck. If his fins are ripped, that's a sign of a bully. Typically you are not supposed to have more than one shark species in the same tank because they are aggressive towards each other. I also have to ask when your last water change was because you mentioned the bala has red in the gills (a sign of ammonia poisoning as well).

. i don't think the iridescent is bothering him. they've been together for a long time and hardly seem to notice each other in the tank. but there is another fish that we have noticed that is slightly aggravating. we thought about taking him out, but we have no where to put him. i'm going to try some tetracycline and see how it goes. thanx for the information.

Let me know how your treatment works, and we'll see if it works. I got my fingers crossed for you.
