Please help identify this fish?

jasonmc Dec 11, 2007 04:24 PM

I recieved this email from someone who thought this fish was a parahna. I know in fact that its not a Parahna but something else. I think it might be African, but my buddy thinks it's South American. Any help with the identity would be much appreciated.

Thanks:
Jason Mc

That is an African Goliath tigerfish, Hydrocynus goliath, their analog to the piranha. It is a characin, and related to the cute little tetras you keep in your aquarium. Can't think of anyone who would want to keep this ugly vicious thing.

Thanks so much for your response and ID. I was scared that I would have to wait like a year for the response. I have never seen a slower forum.
Thanks again for your reply and have a great holiday season.
