Powerhead or mini-jet pump?

Esther Dec 23, 2007 03:57 PM

I have 2 high school research students who want to set up some algal turf filters. They will have 10 gallon tanks on a lower shelf of a grey steel utility shelving unit, and set up their 12 x 13 x 9" deep Rubbermaid basin ATFs on the shelf above. I would say that it is about 24" from the upper region of the 10 gallon tanks to the shelf above, and certainly not more than 30".

We were thinking of using Maxi-jet 600 powerheads (160 gph) to move water from the 10 gallon tanks to the dump bucket of the ATFs above via some plastic tubing. Would this work? Or would a mini-jet pump, 110 gph be better?

Thanks for your input.

Sounds like an awesome experiment. I don't know too much about filters. I've promoted your post to a Hot Topic so you get an answer quickly.

Thanks for the promotion. Nothing like experience from those actually using the products.
