Foam in my Pond/ Temp?

BDimas May 27, 2003 11:28 PM

I was wondering if anyone could tell me why I have foam in my pond in my viv. The viv has only been up and running for 3 days, I did'nt use any type of soap on anything, so I'm stumped. Also what is a good hi-lo temp for Leucs? The hottest it has been is 85f. I have compact fluorecents which get pretty hot.

Thanks, Bryan Dimas

I think the foam will go away after things settle down. I just set up a new tank 3 days ago and it has some foam.

I have one Luec and my tanks range from 75-82 in the summer time. 85 is a bit much, I would try a small comptuer fan to cool down the lights.

Crazy you live in Stockton....... So do I. What kind of frogs do you have?

I just bought a pair of luecs from Jeff at frog day. These are my first PDF's, they've been eating like crazy. Did you go to frog day?

Yes I was there. I got there at nine and left around ten.

Hey Wizard have you been keeping Darts for a while? I have seen some of your viv's in the forum. Maybe if you don't mind I can come to you with some questions I have or may have. I thought that I was pretty much alone in our area with Dart Frogs. We barely see Mantellas here if we're lucky.

My e-mail is rx_wizard@hotmail.com

Any questions you have feel free.

BTW Carters had mantelas about 2 weeks ago. Although I wouldn't buy from them.

If you have a waterfall that empties into your pond, the direct trickle of water falling on the pond surface will stir up the water and cause the proteins in the water to cause bubbles or foam. I remedied this by placing java moss at the bottom of my waterfall to soften the fall of the water. You can also change this by placing a rock out of the water and under the falling stream of water (to break up the force of the falling water) or by diverting the flow down the face of a rock and into the pond.

I hope this explanation was clear. Let me know if it wasn't.

Thanks for the info. Yes it was clear. I kinda thought that it was from the water splashing directly into the pond, and acting like a protein skimmer. Thanks again!

I experienced the foam problem, too. It occured on the side of my tank with a steep waterfall, but only slightly on the side where there is a gentle stream. Whatever the cause, it was not permanent. I have subsequently added some smooth stones to "gentle down" the cascading falls, some Java moss as Homer suggested, as well as some Lilianopsis in the pool. Even with removing everything, drying it out to apply a different sealer to the Winterstone (which was wicking water over the edge) and beginning again with new water, the problem has not recurred.
