Regarding fuems and other chemicals

Jason W May 27, 2003 11:37 PM

When I use to colect snakes I kept the breeding mice in the garage. I also work on a lot of hot rods and there are a lot of fuems in there. Not necisarily exaust but paint and power and cleaner fuems. I had my breeders die on me not long after geting them. I am now back into colecting snakes and would liek to know if these fuems do infact hurt the mice or was it just the timeing? Also are Snakes hurt by them? My wife said if I get manny more I would have to put them somwere els, she suggested the garage however I do not want to do this if they will get hurt by the fuems. As far as tempreture it is never to cold or to hot. The garage is downstairs and stays above 60 every night and never gets above 80 during the hot california summer days. Thanks a bunch for the help.

Yes, the fumes will hurt them, the rodents and the snakes and are very likely the reason they died before. DON'T keep them where you will be working with all those toxins. 60 is a bit low at night anyway so you would need some heat on them. Aiming about 5 degrees higher for the mice and then for the snakes minimum, depending on what you are keeping.

Well for the record I would like to add I have yet to keep any reptiles out there. The problem was found when my last 2 breeder mice died for no aperent resone. Realy 60 is to cool. I was under the impresion that mice can live, thrive and breed in lower temps than that.

I disagree about the temps....
The fumes are probably not good, but 60's are fine. 80's is probably a bit hot though, it may not kill them, but you may have problems getting them to breed at that temp. Mice do better in cooler temps.

Another thought I just had is that if the mice are exposed to the fumes and inhaling toxic stuff, they pass toxins to your snakes. I'm not sure, but I probably wouldn't risk it.

Well shoot what other options would I have without having to bring the smelly things in the house? I cant just leave them out on the deck as a car would surely make them a meal with in an hour. Wander if there is some sort of filtering system I can design. Maybe keep there cage and pipes and everythign inside a cabnet, pur seeler around the dores and just close the dores when the fuems might be there and open them when they are not. HMMMM any advice?

When I said 60s was too cool I was thinking you were gonna put herps out there too. For mice that is cool but okay.
