Feeding

clickman Oct 12, 2003 09:29 AM

My two adopted leos (Both female, not sure on ages) are coming in on Wenesday. I'm still not clear, though, on when to feed. I'm assuming since they're nocturnal to do it in the early evening and then again in the early morning, but I could be wrong.

Also, what parasites are most prevalent in them? I know beardies are infamous for coccidia, any major parasite here? I know that after a leo drops its tail it needs special care, but once its all grown back should I do anything different? (I know one of them has a regenerated tail) Has anyone used Parazap for these guys? Works wonders for my beardie, so maybe it'll help these guys too. And finally, how long should I give them to adjust and start eating before I start worrying? Would it hurt at all to offer a small dish of veggies? I make a big salad for my beardie, and alot of it goes bad before I can use it.

Leos are nocturnal and I always feed mine in the evening or later in the night when they come out. They know when you have food and they'll come out to feast.

When you get your leos you should get a fecal smaple done on their feces. Thats important. If there is something there, usually theu prescribe panacur, unless its something else thats pretty bad. Your vet will let you know. Just make sure you take them to the vet. You'll be better safe than sorry.

Give them a while to eat. They need to get settled into their new environment. I take it they are being shipped to you? If they are, they'll be stressed out from the shipment as well. They'll come around. And its also that time of year when leos dont eat as much or dont eat all.

If you offered a salad to your leos, they wont eat it. Leos are insectivores and eat insects, not greens. Offer your geckos, crickets, mealworms, super worms, butter worms, silk worms, and an ocassional wax worm for a treat only since they are addictive. Some leos will even eat pinkie mice. You can offer a vareity for them. Your feeder insects also need to be gut-loaded before you feed them to your gecko. Thats very important. If you need any help with that just send me an email, and I can help you out.

Pinkies? I'm going to highly reccomend against that for most lizards, especially when they're not neccessarily. They bring ALOT of parasites, the beardie community stopped with them a little bit ago after that discovery.
