Protein Skimmer Fills With Water

Evy Jul 10, 2005 02:09 PM

I have a two week old 55 gal. tank running with a protein skimmer I received as a donation. In the picture I've attached, you can see water has filled up the simmer to within an inch of the top. I just cleaned it out and within 15 min. it filled up like that. This isn't a consistent problem because for the past few days, it has been functioning more or less correctly with just bubbles and gunk depositing in the interior skimmer part and only an inch or less of water accumulating rather than all the way to the top like my picture. Since I don't do anything but clean it out each day, I don't know why sometimes it does this and sometimes it doesn't. Any thoughts/suggestions? My son, who rigged up the skimmer says it shouldn't "run wet" and suggests lowering the sump tank divider an inch or so.

Tone down your skimmer. A protein skimmer is not a tool for water circulation. You don't need a gush of sw going in there. See the color of your collection cup? It's suppossed to be coffee color. You're not only getting wet suds, you are getting water in there. You should only get dry duds in there. That's the protein build up stuck in bubbles.

Tone it down big time.
