What kind of Filter do you suggest?

djdiesel34 Aug 14, 2005 03:14 PM

Hi,

I have been running a salt water tank for a few years now and now I have a friend who is giving me a brand new 90 gallon tank. I want to make it a salt water tank, but every aquarium store gives me different answers as to what kind of filters are really necessary. I think they are basically trying to sell me whatever is most expensive.

So basically my question is, for this size tank, do I need to get a canister filter? Can I simply use a bio wheel tank top filter? Do I need a protein skimmer if I am going to put a reef system in there?

What would you suggest for starting a new 90 gallon salt water tank.

Thanks

id suggest a skimmer for sure.... maybe even a sump perhaps. with a sump it easier to keep your tank maintained. at least i find it does. i wish i still had my 120g tank up. i use a canaster filter for my 20g, and i use a hang-on aquaclear filter for my refuge. along with a seaclone protien skimmer. topped off with a 250W MH.
