My land hermit crab is molting!Need tips

wvcaudill2 Apr 29, 2006 08:35 PM

Hi! I am brand new to these forums, so here I am.

My hermit crab is molting! This is the first time its ever happened to me! Well actually, a week before this hermit crab started molting, my other did, unfortunatly, it did not make it through, and died

So, I noticed the crab was molting, when I picked it up this morning, and its big claw fell off. I noticed, it was hollow, and the whole ekosceleton(I think thats how you spell it) was falling off. I looked farther into it's shell, and I could see the pink of its new layer of skeleton.

To try and make this molt more succesfully, I carefully took it out of it's cage, and cleaned the cage, and replaced the sand. I also made sure it had extra food and water. I placed to small sponges in the water aswell. I also added a few extra shells.

There is no other crab in the tank with it.

The monitor in my tank reads
Temp: 71
Humidity: 53
Please tell me if these are the right conditions, and if they are not then tell me what is and a few tips on how to get to those conditions.

Please tell me anything else I should do.

First off, don't disturb the crab as they are very fragile during a molt. Leave the ectoskelaton in the tank.

This particular forum is for aquatic crabs. You'll find a hermit crab forum at InsectHobbyist (forums.insecthobbyist.com/forum.php?catid=25).
