i've never had a saltwater tank before and really have no idea what i'm doing. i haven't gotton anything yet because i wanted to find out more first. what supplies do i need? could i get a 20 gallon and put clownfish in it? i really like gobys and inverts and live corals, could i put any of those together? how do i filter everything? and do i need a protien skimmer, because i'm not really sure what they do but everywhere i read they mention them, plus they are very expensive. any help would be greatly appriciated, thanks.

A good place to start is to read thru faq.thekrib.com/sbegin.html. It's going to take time to cycle the tank which gives you plenty of time to then research the various types of fish you want. Do keep in mind that you're not going to be able to put much in a 20 gallon.
