Zebra eel (Gymnomuraena zebra)

amelthia May 10, 2007 03:42 PM

I'm thinking of getting a zebra eel and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this eel. Here's the deal: I have never kept a saltwater tank (only freshwater) but I plan on converting the tank I have and letting it cycle and keeping some small starter fish (damsels) for a couple months before getting an eel. I'm really not a fan of the snowflake but I very much like the zebra. From the research I've done it is very reasonable to care for and is rather low maintenance IN COMPARISON TO other eels. I am by no means saying that I think it will be easy to care for. I plan on working closely with my local fishstore that specializes in saltwater tanks (they themselves have a pet 6' green moray in the store that they've had for several years and it looks very fat and healthy). They also do in home tank maintenence and water testing for a small fee which I plan on purchasing. Does anyone have any comments on their experiences with this particular species that I might find helpful before I look into setting up my tank? The main question I have is on size..I've read averages sizes anywhere from 2'-6' yet it's consistently listed as the smallest of the morays, aside from the 11" dwarfs which are quite pricey.
Thanks, Kim

I'm not sure if this will upset you when I say "No, I have no experience with them.", but I can tell you a 6' zebra would be really freaking unheard of. I'm pretty sure they max out at 4'5" or around there. I wouldnt be suprised to see one a little larger. As far as experience goes all you really need to do is just get the hang of saltwater, do your research, and then get the zebra. As far as I know the care for these are pretty straight forward. It seems to me like you already know what there is to need to know. This my opinion only lol. I hope this came as some help.
