New Anemone Questions

Claudia_Haun Jul 15, 2007 11:16 AM

We just bought a new anemone yesterday for our 29 gallon tank. The type wasn't specified on our receipt, but from researching this site, I'm pretty sure it's a condy. We also have a percula clownfish (false, I'm pretty sure), 2 yellowtailed damsels,a peppermint shrimp, and 3 live rocks.
The anemone was about 2 1/2 inches wide when we bought it, but this morning had contracted into a tiny button. We turned the light on and it seems to be opening up very slowly. My questions are about light, size, and feeding.
We were advised to buy a new light, but according to my estimates, it doesn't seem like enough. We have one Coralife 50/50 24" bulb and were advised to leave it on 9 hours a day. (The tank is in front of windows but surrounded by plants because we had a problem with algae). Do we need more bulbs or longer duration?
I've read about feeding shrimp or some other recommended meat- should I find out when this one was last fed? How often would you recommend?
Is it normal for an anemone to contract that much? What is "normal" as far as size variability in an anemone? Thanks so much!

I would say what you need is acclimation time ore than anything else. Once the anemone gets comfortable it will blossom out and if it needs more light it will let you know by actually moving closer to the light.

If your still having problems with algae try reducing the time. I only give my reef tank about 7 hours a day.
