Hello,
I am very, very new to hermit crabs. So new in fact that I found out tonight I was a new owner of a hermit crab. Of some kind. My family just got home from a trip to the outer banks of NC where my husband handed me a very cool spiral snail shell. When the shell fell off my "very cool things" shelf and suddenly had scary spider-looking feet I realized I had a little problem....
Anyway the crab (Hermes) is in a 10-gallon tank with child play sand with "highs" and "lows" and some conch and other shells and a shallow bowl of fresh water now. I put 2 peeled grapes and some lettuice in front of him. He was out crawling around until I found him but is now locked up tight. I've been reading some on this forum and have a clue but returning him is not an option as I am very far from the beach and obviously turning him loose wouldn't work well for him, we live in a dry area.
I don't know what kind he is, I can't get a good look at him, but I do want him to be happy and healthy. Any advice for someone who accidentally got a "wild" hermit crab?
Thanks!
