My first moulting hermit crab!!

Myristica Mar 02, 2006 05:57 AM

I'm a hermit crab owner for only 3 months. One of my crabs apparently started to moult, his exosceleton almost came off, what should I do? Do I have to put my other 2 crabs immediately in a new crabarium, or may I leave them there? Since I don't want to disturb my moulting crab, I don't know what should I do. May he need something else than water, food, some shells and a place to hide? And how long is the moulting and the regeneration afterwards? Please, help me, I never had a moulting crab before! Thank you!

Hi!
Not to worry! As I am sure you know, there is a ton of info for this on the web. Try www.hermit-crabs.com. I have found this site VERY useful and informative. Yes, you do have to seperate the moulting crab from the others. If this is not possible, try using a 2l pop bottle well washed and cut in half. Use the top portion (with the cap off) to cover the moulting crab. Make sure to sink it deep into the substrate so other crabs cannot enter. Hermit crabs can be cannibalistic when another crab is moulting so the MUST be segregated for their own safety! You can take off the bottle after the hermit has eaten the old shell.(Gross, but necessary.) Usually you would put the crab into a seperate tank prior to molt, but it sounds like it's a little late for that! Hope this helps!
