Hello all!
this is my first time posting here!
rowdy & I recently rescued two brown head parrots from some really awful conditions....Rowdy's co-worker knew that we have a yellow naped amazon as well as lovebirds and a variety of other animals in our mini menagerie here in NY...long story short he asked if we wanted to have his two brown head parrots since they were moving and could not take them with him...long story short, we went over to his house and what i saw really shocked me. these two beautiful birds (a male and a female) were in a filthy cage in their pantry which also serves as the laundry room. there is ZERO light in this pantry, not even a lightbulb. the birds had NO food and NO water...literally there were not even food and water cups in the cage. the only hting in the cage was one perch and two popcorn kernels at the bottom of the cage. these birds looked scared, malnourished and light deprived. The female is missing the feathers on her head and their color is not as vibrant as it should be...we immediatly said that we would take them for fear that they would simply die where they were currently. we brought them home, gave them a mineral/vitamin supplement, water, food and some treats... they went for the food like starved animals and went to town. they also, an hour later also had the runs, prolly from not having eaten in so long.
My question is this:
these two birds are very skittish and are extremly shy. We jave only had them for two days and already they are warming up to us. At first they would cling to the cage and freak out if we walked by. they are now making more noise and are sitting on their perch observing us.
1. What should we give them to improve their health besides the supplement
2. Should we give them smaller food portions more often to avoid the runs?
3. How do you socialize a parrot that has been traumitized like these two obviously have?
4. could they be carrying a disease that might spread to our yellow naped amaon?
5. the fact that she (Dolce as she is now called) has no feathers on her head..do u think he (the male) pulled them out? How do we address this problem?
And last..sorry for this long post but this is our first rescue....
they also had in this pantry/laundry room an african grey who was WAY traumatized..he was in a huge cage that was so piled up with poop that it completly covered the ground at least two inches thick. again, he had a blanket over his cage and had NO light. When we lifted the blanket and talked to the parrot for a few minutes u could tell he was attention starved. he started to bob his head and speak to us. He too had no food or water and didnt look healthy. we offered to take him as well but the owner was hesitant. we really want to get this bird out of there, but what can we do??? is there an agency we can report these iunhumane bird owners to? Any suggestions would help!!!
thank you for listening!
