Help! how to stop her from picking at her wound???

elenacam Nov 27, 2003 08:10 PM

One of my lovebirds seems to have broken a feather or
something while playing and it bled a little. So far,
no big problem.
The thing is that ever since, she (it's a she) won't
stop picking at the little wound and she herself made
it a big wound!
I have applied antibiotic ointment, antiseptic powder,
and it starts to heal and then WHAM, looks like it
gives her itching or something, and then she picks at
it again and it she makes herself bleed again and gets
to wound even bigger and worse!!!!!

I don't know how to make her stop from picking at the
wound! so far I have taken care of it so it didn't get
infected, but as she keeps on making the wound bigger
and picking at it all the time, I fear it might get
infected and worse! it really is really big already!!!

(it is right where the feathers of her tail start,
between her wings)

What should I do??? how to stop her from picking at
her own wound?????

Heeeeeelp!

She needs to see a vet to have the wound treated. Perhaps he/she can give you some topical ointment to put on the wound, which might deter her from picking at it. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for asking!
Yes, the ointment is a great idea. An antiseptic one. The problem is that the wound "itches" as it heals and that she then picks at the scab and wounds herself again.
I have made a plastic collar, like those people use with dogs, but smaller, of course, to prevent her from turning her head and picking at the area. She still gets to break it (the collar) after a while, I just bought a harder plastic, hoping she won't be able to break this one.
