Suitable species.., help is needed.

Hi everyone

I am thinking of building an aviary outside in the garden area. The problem is that I live in the Middle East region where summer day temperatures often reach 40 C (104 F) and even exceeds on occasions. Winters are mild, averaging15-20 C at night (59-68 F). Rains are few and far between, humidity is most often high throughout the year.

The question is: which types of parrots and/or parakeets would enjoy these temperature parameters?

Thank you.

Most any species of parrot will do fine in these conditions, as long as you take some very necessary precautions. For the winter, they need an area that`s sheltered from any cold winds. And for the hot summers, be sure that they have plenty of shade and LOTS of water. Supplying a shallow bathing dish (which must be cleaned on a daily basis) can also help keep them cool. Or, if you can afford it, you can even install a misting system that will turn on at the hottest time of day to help keep them cooled off.

I just came back from Papua New Guinea, though, where there are several species of birds. And it was in the 30s for much of our stay, only cooling down at night. Parrots are used to hot weather and should do fine, as long as they can get out of direct sunlight. And their feathers do a wonderful job of insulating them in the winter, as long as they can get out of any cold wind or rain.
