Help Fly Sprayed Budgie

chezza Jun 18, 2005 06:10 AM

Hi all
I was up north today and dropped in on a friend, her nephew had managed to get hold of the fly spray 3 months ago and had sprayed her white 1 yr old budgie. Awhole can of the stuff. They gave him lots of water, fed him as normal and hoped for the best. He got his voice back a month ago but is drinking water likes its going out of fashion and soiling the floor till its soaked in a day. Today when I saw him he had taken a turn for the worse, was quiet, not eating, droppings were clear water and generally depressed. I brang him home and have given him vitamins in his drink, changed his brand of seed, sat his cage next to my conure for company and he is now crapping a green lump and not as much water as he was. He is looking in his mirror again and seems to be abit better however I am worried about his water consumption and the amount of water hes crapping as when I saw him six months ago he was not drinking that much or soiling that much. So obviously the fly spray has effected his organs possibly. Anyway will take him to the vet on monday if hes not any better, anyone got any other tips? or heard of the same disaster and side effects.
All tips would be grateful thanks.

We have an amazon in that was sprayed with a mite spray not meant for use with birds. It damaged her air sack and enlarged her heart. She is doing very well though although her heart rate is much faster and stress does effect her more than it would a usual healthy bird. She is leading a very good full life though. She did have to be treated by a vet. They had to use a medication that was breathed in through her airways. It worked like a nebulizer does for humans although I am not sure if they have a different name for the machine they use for birds. I am not sure of any other suggestions except until a vet has seen the bird to make sure to keep stress at a minimum and save diet changes etc until after the vet visit.

Hi
Thank you very much for your message. The budgie came right for a couple of days then we found him rolling on the floor tuesday morning. Took him to the vet and told them to put him down if he was not able to be fixed with medicine as he was really suffering. The vet held him over night decided not to put him down said he was coming right again, but might have days, weeks or months to live she dosent know. Hes got kidney disease- renal failure, effecting his legs as well. Have changed a few things in his cage , wrapping his cage in wool blanket at night and giving him as much water as he wants. Seems to be able to sit on his perch and feeding now. Thanks very much.I hope your birds feeling better these days.
