Can a Macaw have hives?

kidder_seven Aug 01, 2005 12:04 AM

My Macaw had what looked like hives over his right eye. About three raised bumps, with increasing redness. He would scratch at it constantly and was having trouble sleeping. I spoke to the vet about it, but he doesn't think Macaw's get hives. He didn't see the "hives" so I am not sure what to think. I know what I saw.... Can any one answer this puzzle?

I have never heard of one getting hives. I believe they can get a small cyst or "sty" the same as humans can though which can cause much irritation. Also some allergic reactions can cause bumps to form around the eye area. Watch for other signs of sickness especially respiratory problems or changes in eating habits. Also if your vet is not an avian vet I would suggest finding one in your area. Many vets will work with birds but don't have the specialized training to treat all avian problems.
