Fixing up an old cage

babette563 Aug 22, 2005 09:27 AM

I was given a very large parrot cage but it needs a little work. The paint is chipping off and I would like to repaint it. My husband said that we will need to remove all of the paint and have it professionally painted (paint booth and baked). Where and how do I begin this process? Do I really need to "bake" the paint?

some birds are MUCH harder on paint/cages than others.

What happened to the previous bird that was in the cage? YOu need to find out, as some diseases are very contagious, and you don't want your bird getting sick.

It's a maximillian pionus. The previous owner needed to upgrade because he adopted another macaw and did not have the room for two large cages. The cage has been chewed on and there is a little rust. My husband wants to sandblast it to remove all of the paint.

Well sandblasting would be a good start to get rid of the old. If you can find someone to paint the cage with a non-toxic lead free paint who will bake it and everything that is wonderful. If not you could check on some of the online stores that sell cages some do have paints that you can use on bird cages. I cannot peronsally recommend any but with a search you should be able to find some.
