Budgie issues....

Green_Ranger Apr 02, 2006 03:43 PM

I bought 2 budgies 1 1/2 days ago and I'm a little worried about them. They haven't eatten anything but a whole millet stick in those 1 1/2 days. They haven't touched their other food. Only one of them has gotten a drink (that I know of)and it was while she was taking a bath. Neither of them is puffed up, but they are sleeping a lot. I think that might have to do with them settling in and my work schedule has been crazy so the light isn't off for a full 10 hours. Will be able to start that tonight, though. They're already pretty tame and will sit on my finger as long as I want them to. No runny stools and they are using the bathroom as usual. Advice? Am I just worrying for nothing?

More than likely the eating is just stress related from their move and settling in. An idea on their lighting if you are going to be gone at their bedtime and wake time a lot is you can either set a timer for them that turns on and off the lights in the room they are in, which can be purchased in many places quite inexpensively. Or else if you are there but have the lights on you could try covering them with a darker sheet to block out most of the light from their cage. Keep an eye on them and give them the foods they are used to at least in the beginning but try to introduce a variety of foods, when they are settling in it is good to have the same thing they are used to but it is also a point when they are already having changes so they can get used to new foods as well. If you try completely changing the foods they are used to they will not eat and can become quite sick but if you give them what they are used to and also offer some fresh foods or birdie breads they may decide to pick through them as well!

Good luck!
