beanbrrd May 04, 2006 07:22 PM

We're preparing for a newcomer "Samba", a blue/gold macaw and I'm in the process of makin' some toys, I wanna give some color to the wood and was thinkin' about using food coloring. any other ideas? And the wood will be douglas fir or pine I guess.

Food coloring and koolaid both work to a certain degree. They won't give you a really bold color but if the wood is allowed to soak it will give a nice stain color to the wood. It colors rope really well at least the cotton variety. Many people use the food coloring mixed with alcohol instead of water and wipe the color onto the wood instead of letting it soak this works somewhat as the alcohol evaporates really quickly and the color is then all that is left.

There is a product sold specially for coloring bird toys. I am not sure of the name of it right off but it works very well and gives you a very bright bold color to the wood. It is more expensive but seems to last quite a while. I believe a lot of pet stores sell it and you should be able to find it if you do a search. It is specified to only mix with rubbing alcohol and I have heard many good things about it if you don't mind the more extravagant price. If you can't find the name let me know and I will track it down for you!
