I'm new to this breeding business and am wondering if it is normal for the female finch to lay just 1 egg? Our first batch just hatched a few days ago and she laid 4 eggs. Now this other pair has laid just one.

On very rare occassions they may lay only one but it is normal for them to lay from 2-5 eggs. Make sure she is not egg bound, keep a close eye on her to watch for signs of lethargy, puffing out, not eating etc. It can take a couple days for the mother to lay a second egg but if not laid by the 3-4 day she has probably either laid all she is going to or else is having complications.
