I am new to finches and have had this pair since last fall. I kept waiting for them to lay eggs, and have been disappointed. A couple of weeks ago I got home and noticed the female pecking at something on the floor of the cage. When I looked closer, I realized it was a partially formed chick. It had a few feathers and everything, but clearly had not hatched out naturally. I thought it had accidentally fallen. This pair is conastantly tearing down and rebuilding the nest. Today I spotted an egg on the floor. I placed it back in the nest, but it got kicked out again. Then I saw that one of the birds, I think the female, had pecked at it until it broke. Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening?
