cockatiels and lovebirds

carmeny Jun 11, 2007 11:40 PM

We are building an indoor aviary and we are wondering if two cockatiels and two lovebirds can be in the same aviary. Does anyone know? We have noticed at the pet stores sometimes they have cockatiels and lovebirds in the same aviary.

I would strongly suggest against it. Lovebirds can be quite aggressive to other birds and cockatiels are quite easy going. We have seen cockatiels with pecked off toes and other injuries from being housed with lovebirds and budgies. We have on cockatiel in right now that a lovebird kept pulling out its small crest and the cockatiel would just sit there doing nothing while it happened (at its old home, not here LOL!) but would then chirp loudly and bite when any people came near. When separated the crest grew back and the cockatiel is now quite tame.

Thank you! We are building it ourselves so we will put a divider down the middle and separate the two sets of birds. I wasn't sure if one was more aggressive than the other so that is good to know!

I would keep them separated. Lovebirds can be very aggressive, especially the females. So, I would either build 2 aviaries or put a partition in the one.
