Argh! Mites! how to get rid of?

clawskitty Jul 04, 2007 09:59 AM

OK. a friend came to me with a baby blue bird. I dont have a problem feeding him (at all) or keeping him warm or cleaning his area. The only problem I have is the fact he's got mites. I have a sun conure who's been "Showing" the little guy that its ok to trust food from me, and to trust me around and not get too upset. Now, the only ting I have never had with my sun conure is mites. Most other things I can handle. I need to know how to get rid of the mites on a bird before they cause a serious issue.
When i had mites on reptiles i bought something called reptile relief, and that could be used on all reptiles (no amphibeans) dogs, cats, and even puppies and kittens. You could spray it on yourself, in bedding areas, and for the reptiles, you didnt even have to remove the water. Anyone think it would be ok to use this on a bird? Maybe not spray it directly on him, but on his bedding? and any the gloves I use to handle the little guy? (rubber gloves, cause i hate mites)
Or, if anyone has a better suggestion, i would HUGELY appreciate it!!!!!!!

DO NOT USE THAT PRODUCT ON BIRDS!!!! We have an orange winged amazon that came to us after having mite spray used on it that was safe for mammals and reptiles. Her feathers turned white, fell out, regrew in grey and finally after the third molt came back in regular color. While this was happening she had severe respiratory problems and her heart became enlarged. She now has allergies to almost everything. We were told by the vet that she seems happy now and has a "good quality" of life but to watch her not become overexcited or her heart will probably give out on her. We love her and she will live out the rest of her days whether few or many happily with us.

For bird mites please see your avian vet and get a treatment that is specifically for birds not for other animals as their respiratory system is quite different.

Thanks for the warning, but here's one for you. I contacted a wildlife rehabber, and she told me to use Seven Dust. This is a powder poisen that used for veggies. Said she's had luck with it her entire career. As far as vets go, well, they told me to call the rehabber. Go figure. In any case, the little blue is doing better, and growing like a weed... and of course, pooing as much as he can. gotta love that part.

a bit late, but how is the little one doing? Any time you find an abandoned bird, first, try to find the parents and return it to them. If parents can't be located, you should try to find a rehabber. It's actually illegal to have wild birds (most of them) but, well, we've all been guilty (I think)
I hope he's okay!
