Kiwi birds???

wolf_cry02 Jul 22, 2007 03:16 AM

Can you keep a kiwi as a pet? If so where can you buy one? I have wanted one forever but could never get any info on them. :P

It's unlikely they'll be available as pets anytime soon as they are an endangered species and live only in New Zealand and possibly the eastern areas of Australia. As far as I know, there are no kiwi breeders in the world (that are legal, anyway) and they need very specific conditions to thrive, anyway (changing habitat is one of the main reasons they're in such bad shape right now.)

The only I can of to be allowed to take care of one of these amazing flightless birds would be to volunteer at a zoo or go to New Zealand and volunteer at a kiwi rescue/shelter. Although they would make interesting pets, capturing them for the pet trade would be devastating to the wild population for the time being.

Here's hoping these little guys continue on the road to making a full comeback in the wild!
