Mealworm information....please help...

bmills Oct 12, 2003 12:53 PM

I just got 1000 mealworms and I am keeping them non-refridgerated, and I have some apple and orange slices in there for water source. What do I have to go about doing if I want to breed them? Please let me know. Can I just leave them alone and they will breed? Let me know and thanks ahead of time.

Do you do this for breeding purposes, or just because?

If you only have 1 or 2 geckos, I'd refridgerate some of your orignal 1000 for feeding now if they're all roughly the same size. In a healthy colony you should have many different sizes of larvae but having more than a dozen beetles at one time seems to reduce the amount of mealworms you get--I think they eat the eggs. I have six smaller colonies in my classroom so I always have a variety of sizes to choose from and a safeguard in case a mold situation manifests itself on a long weekend.
