Incest?

My pair of zebra just started laying eggs, which got me thinking. I understand that you need to separate the youngsters and the parents once they fledge. Right? Well, would the babies mate among themsevles if kept as a group together when they grow up? Your info is greatly appreciated.

You're correct! It's best to separate them and find unrelated mates for them so they won't inbreed. Otherwise, they probably would mate with each other when they grow up.

Thanks PH Canary. I'm just curious. What happens if they do inbreed?

Inbreeding produces genetically weak birds. It can cause hemophilia, baldness, susceptibility to disease, kidney and liver problems, deformity in their babies, and tumors, among other things. Above all, birds would not inbreed in the wild, since their instincts are to produce genetically healthy chicks.
