Trimming down our Bird collection....

MisLegend Aug 07, 2003 11:11 AM

We're trying to trim down our finch collection. We started off with three but we now have 5. I'm not a breeder, the finches just bred, as finches often do.

Question is, what do I do with the babies? They're teenagers now and the size of their parents. Both are healthy. I'm not sure where to bring them. We're running out of space.

Also is there a way to tell the difference between a male and female society finch. I know that the males will sing, but not all do. We have one singing finch. We were considering having an all female or all male collection to prevent future breeding.

I've looked for finch rescue places where I live but there are none. From what I understand, petstores will not accept babies unless they're from a registered breeder. Please help!

I just read your post. Did you ever find a home for your finches? You could check with local bird clubs if there is one in your area. They could probably help you.
And no, there's no way to be sure of the sex of society finches, not by looking at them. Only way I know of, besides dna testing which most people don't do on finches because of the cost, is to wait and see if any lays eggs. Or, as you mentioned, most males will sing. That's still kind of "iffy".
